Sawmills of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Here, El Patron (the boss) shows me around his selection of Chakte Kok logs. Here's a difficult wood. When it's freshly sawn, you get this intense bright red color in the heartwood - no kidding. The sapwood is a crappy tan-yellow color. And the wood itself is finicky; it has poor stability and it moves a lot even after being kiln dried. Chakte Kok also has a nasty tendency to "end check" and split while adjusting to the climate. High waste factor indeed. However, people still like the wood because of that impressive color. The world is full of the yin-yang effect.
